Job Description

The academic advisor guides students in developing and achieving their educational goals. This role involves helping students understand university policies and explore various academic options, including degrees, minors, certificates, internships, and study abroad programs. The academic advisor also provides information on university resources to enhance student success and is crucial to the office's recruitment and retention efforts through direct student interaction.

Job Responsibilities
Student Advising & Support: Advise and support current and prospective students, focusing on first-time, sophomore, and first-semester transfer students. This includes advising for various majors, such as those within the College of Arts and Sciences and other academic units as assigned.
Responsibilities also include course selection assistance, identifying strengths and barriers to success, and developing strategies to achieve academic and professional goals. Proactively communicate with students regarding their academic progress.
Program Implementation: Execute projects aimed at student support, such as new student orientation, coordinating tutoring services, assisting with recruitment and scholarship selection, and faculty outreach.
Collaboration: Work with college advising directors, department chairs, and faculty to stay updated on curriculum matters and student organizations.
Resource Connection: Help students identify and connect with support services like tutoring, counseling, and co-curricular activities.
Registration & Transfer Evaluation: Organize and assist with pre-registration and registration for in-person and online students. Evaluate transfer course credits and substitutions.
Coordination & Improvement: Compile, verify, and prepare materials and information as assigned. Recommend improvements for efficiency and resource allocation.
Problem Solving & Development: Solve standard problems using established procedures. Assist in developing and implementing programs and projects.
Communication & Teamwork: Exchange information, ask questions, and ensure understanding. Develop working relationships with functional teams.
Routine Tasks: Perform assigned routine tasks following existing procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Student Support Expertise: Possess conceptual knowledge of theories, practices, and procedures within student support functions.
Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with UMSL’s MyView system (or similar student information systems, especially PeopleSoft programs), MyConnect or similar scheduling software, and Degree Audit Report System (DARS) or similar software programs is desired. Knowledge of Microsoft Office is preferred.
Student-Centered Approach: Be accessible to students and campus community members, fostering an environment where concerns are valued.
Guidance & Education: Help students develop success strategies and guide their decision-making. Educate students and campus community members on academic programs, policies, and procedures.
Collaboration: Effectively collaborate with colleagues within the office and across campus.
Continuous Learning: Actively seek learning opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Technology Integration: Demonstrate knowledge and implementation of technology tools and resources and educate students on their use for academic success.

Shift

40 hours/week, Monday thru Friday, some evenings and weekends.
Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, College Personnel, or Counseling.
  • 3 years of experience in higher education, an academic office, advising, coaching, student development, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in advising and financial aid.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $40,000-$45,000
Grade: GGS-008
