Job Description

As the Director of Tax, you’ll be responsible for helping to lead, develop, and drive the global tax strategy for New Relic. You’ll be a key member of the leadership team developing and strengthening collaborative relationships with colleagues in Business, Accounting and FP&A.

In your role, you’ll lead a team of five tax professionals and will be primarily responsible for managing and overseeing all aspects of direct and indirect tax. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, local, and international tax laws, develops tax strategies, manages tax risk, and leads the tax team to optimize the company’s financial performance and minimize tax liabilities.

What you'll do

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Directing and overseeing the organization’s tax policies and objectives.
  • Ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
  • Reviewing and ensuring the accuracy of tax returns.
  • Developing and implementing effective tax planning strategies to minimize the organization's tax liabilities while complying with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Providing guidance and support to the Chief Accounting Officer and Global Controller on all tax-related matters.
  • Ensuring timely and accurate tax provision and financial reporting.
  • Managing tax audits and other related inquiries from tax authorities.
  • Staying up-to-date with changes in tax laws and regulations and adjust strategies accordingly.
  • Researching complex tax issues and legal changes, consulting with internal/external professionals to gain insights.
  • Continuously evaluating and improving tax procedures. This includes designing new procedures, implementing efficient solutions (software, outsourcing), etc.
  • Advising on tax implications of organization’s business decisions, including mergers and acquisitions.
  • Overseeing monthly sales/use and tangible personal property tax returns for all locations and entities, ensuring accuracy of assessments.
  • Leading special tax projects or studies such as transfer pricing, R&D tax credits, BEAT, GILTI, or BEPS.
  • Developing and implementing tax strategies to support the organization’s remote worker arrangements.
  • Maintaining relationships with external tax advisors and auditors.
  • Managing and leading a team of tax professionals.

This role requires

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, with preference given to master’s degree in Taxation.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years demonstrating progressive responsibility in tax compliance, planning, and management, including work within a Big 4 public accounting firm.
  • In-depth understanding of federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
  • Expertise in ensuring compliance with tax statutes and regulations.
  • Ability to develop and implement tax strategies to minimize tax liabilities.
  • Knowledge of financial reporting and accounting principles, including those related to ASC 740.
  • Experience in managing tax audits and negotiations with tax authorities.
  • Strong leadership skills to manage a team and oversee departmental functions.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to address complex tax issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with various stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with tax software (OneSource) and other financial systems (Netsuite).
  • Commitment to staying updated on changes in tax laws and regulation.
