SUMMARY OF POSITION
City of Apple Valley is accepting applications for Apple Valley Liquor Store 2
Responsible for providing excellent customer service. Responsible for following all policies, procedures, laws and regulations related to the sale of alcohol and tobacco. Duties include but are not limited to: Operating computerized point-of-sales system, stocking liquor store coolers and shelves; lifting and carrying beer and cases of merchandise; general cleaning of store and interacting in a professional, courteous and helpful manner with customers. This position reports to the Liquor Store Manager and may take day-to-day direction from the on-duty Assistant Store Manager, Liquor Store Supervisor and/or Lead Clerk.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Check identification to determine eligibility to purchase liquor.
  2. Waits on customers: finding items on shelves, recommending and selling merchandise, and carrying merchandise to vehicles.
  3. Operates Point of Sale (POS) system. Accurately rings up retail sales, receives payment, and gives change.
  4. Stocks, arranges, and rotates liquor merchandise on shelves; stocks beer coolers and sets up displays. Stocking shelves involves carrying cases of beer, liquor, and wine and counting inventory.
  5. Performs general cleaning and upkeep at the liquor store, including but not limited to: setting up and dismantling displays; dusting shelves, displays, etc.; vacuuming and sweeping floors; removing snow/ice, dirt, and debris from outside walkways; removing trash from store; cleaning store and cooler windows; washing shelves, bottles, and products; and cleaning restrooms.
  6. Performs other duties consistent with the responsibilities of the position as apparent or assigned by the City.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Basic knowledge of retail sales and money handling.
  • Strong mathematical aptitude and ability to work with numbers.
  • Ability to meet and interact positively with the public on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills.
  • Must receive acceptable result of background check.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with cash register operation and retail sales.
  • Liquor Sales Clerk experience.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
  • Work is performed primarily in a retail sales environment that includes exposure to computer screens.
  • Physical strength to frequently lift cases of merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to stand or walk for long periods. Requires frequent bending, twisting, and stooping.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Reports to: Liquor Store Manager. May take daily work direction from the on-duty Liquor Store Supervisor, and/or Lead Clerk.
Schedule: Part-time, variable hours. Involves shift work, including holidays. (10-18 hours a week). Flexible nights and weekends.

Position Classification: Casual. At-will employment.

This casual, part-time, variable-hour position may be eligible for the following benefits:

Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) Retirement Plan.
State mandated pension plan. Employee and Employer contributions. Employee is enrolled in PERA if they work more than 6 months and earn $425 in a calendar month. Some exclusions apply. Members are vested (eligible for a pension benefit at retirement age) in the plan after 3 years.

Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST).
Employees who work 80 hours in a year will accrue one hour of earned sick and safe time (ESST) for every 30 hours they work, up to at 48 hours in a year. Unused ESST hours carry forward into future years, up to a maximum of 80 hours.


ESST hours can be used for reasons such as:
  • the employee's mental or physical illness, treatment or preventive care;
  • a family member's mental or physical illness, treatment or preventive care;
  • absence due to domestic abuse, sexual assault or stalking of the employee or a family member;
  • closure of the employee's workplace due to weather or public emergency or closure of a family member's school or care facility due to weather or public emergency; and
  • when determined by a health authority or health care professional that the employee or a family member is at risk of infecting others with a communicable disease.
