Store General Manager - Greater Bridgeport, CT

Overview

The General Manager leads a Pet Care Center to achieve top-line sales growth while prioritizing the welfare, health, and proper care of all animals. This role drives business through people, performance, and process, delivering profitability and a high-quality partner, guest, and pet experience in alignment with Petcos vision: Healthier Pets. Happier People. Better World.

Responsibilities

  • People
    • Build a team that embodies the Petco brand by delivering exceptional service and driving guest loyalty.
    • Attract, hire, and retain a diverse team of top talent.
    • Train, coach, and develop leaders and hourly partners to run the store efficiently and to Petco standards, including effective rollout selling models.
    • Create a professional environment that inspires growth and engagement of partners.
    • Lead a culture of teamwork and inclusion, providing clear direction and priorities.
    • Ensure quick and courteous service by helping partners determine guest needs and sharing product knowledge.
    • Responsible for partner performance management and continuous improvement.
  • Performance
    • Meet or exceed goals related to total center sales, profitability, and operational excellence.
    • Schedule and adjust labor hours and payroll to maximize productivity and achieve sales goals.
    • Regularly review financial and operational metrics and audits.
    • Identify underperforming metrics and develop strategies leveraging Petco programs to improve and grow the business.
    • Market the Pet Care Center and plan on-site and community events.
  • Process
    • Ensure proper health, welfare, and handling of all animals.
    • Price, display, and stock merchandise according to inventory levels and guidelines; adjust as needed to meet visual standards and ad plans.
    • Complete accounting, inventory, and payroll paperwork timely; keep expenses within budget.
    • Maintain the centers appearance, safety procedures, and compliance with policies.
    • Protect pets and merchandise and minimize loss through proper controls.
    • Open/close the center in accordance with safety and security policies.
    • Maintain a professional image, appearance, and cleanliness of the center.
  • Other Essential Duties
    • Model inspiring leadership and proactive teamwork aligned with company goals.
    • Promote safety by adhering to policies and ensuring proper execution of new procedures.
    • Foster a collaborative culture that encourages ideas to increase efficiency and guest engagement.
    • Prioritize talent development and maintain a strong bench of qualified partners.
    • Engage and be present, representing Petcos brand at a high level.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required; strong business acumen, analysis, problem-solving, and people development skills preferred.
  • Excellent communication and computer skills required.
  • Three or more years of management experience; prior retail management preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and knowledge of general business practices are desirable.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong customer service and genuine interest in animals; professional appearance and demeanor required.
  • Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle. Internal candidates may be required to complete PETCO Management Achievement Program modules.

Supervisory Responsibility

The General Manager directly supervises a team of leaders and all Pet Care Center partners including services.

Work Environment

Most duties are indoors; some activities may require lifting up to 50 pounds and standing for extended periods. Occasional travel may be required.

Contacts

Continuous contact with the public and coordination with departments, distribution centers, and support centers as needed.
